Upgrading My Self-Care

After spending a few weeks or more quarantining and recovering, I have been trying to get my life back on track and pull myself together.

This year has brought a lot of uncertainty and unease. I believe the first thing we forget to do during difficult times is to take care of ourselves - something so crucial and essential. Self-care is about making sure that we are healthy and happy. Yet, after learning about the different dimensions of wellness in my summer health and fitness class, I discovered that there are many areas of our lives that we must focus on to be well-rounded.

The 8 dimensions of wellness are physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, financial, and occupational. We should all create a wellness profile, examining how our lifestyles, attitudes, and characteristics relate to each dimension, considering three strengths each and choosing the most important ones to focus on.

After making lists in all of my dimensions of wellness, I chose a few to work on this week. I realized that the best way to get myself out of the quarantine blues was to treat myself with the love and care I deserve but have been neglecting.

Self-care and self-love go hand-in-hand as Mandy Hale once said, "It's not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It's necessary." We all deserve and need some loving and caring right now!

This week, I made myself feel beautiful again. I treated myself with a hair cut and highlight and my nails painted a bright, happy orange. I improved my skincare routine in the morning and night. I exfoliated my body with a scrub and tried a face mask. I also bought some new clothes and put on makeup for the first time in forever. When you look good, you feel good!

For physical wellness, I exercised every morning with my daily workout challenges, took a walk (and photoshoot of course) in a park with my family, and balanced my diet with more fruit, vegetables, and protein.

It is our duty as humans to check in with others and support each other so I surrounded myself with people I love, one of the most essential things to do. I made sure that they were taking care of themselves. Yet, I also took some time for myself, watching a new movie in bed while whitening my teeth.

The best part of my week was fostering a little 1 pound kitten named Stu, a task that covers many dimensions of wellness on its own, especially physical and emotional wellness.

When you're feeling down, attempt to love yourself.
